Finish Your Fucking Book Boot Camp

get your book in shape

::Summer 2017::

Begins June 8, 2017

Start writing:

You have begun writing a book, and have gotten stuck. You’re excited about your characters, your project, and you want to keep writing, but for whatever reason, your momentum has flagged. It’s been a while since you produced new pages, or you feel you’re plodding along too slowly.

Maybe life and work have intervened, maybe you are creatively blocked, maybe it seems impossible to make writing a priority. But like any other exercise, getting started is the hardest part, and the support of a community yields better success rates. Don’t do it alone! Let this boot camp jump-start your writing and help you make real progress on your book this summer.

What You Get:

A Kick in the Pants

The FYFB Boot Camp is a thirteen week get-your-book-in-shape program starting June 8 and running through the end of August. The goal will be to produce at least five (rough) pages per week, and ideally close to 100 pages over the summer, depending on how intensely you want to push yourself.

Each week you will have 5-8 pages due to me by email as well as brief plans for the next 5-8 pages. You will also receive a weekly butt-kicking/encouragement email from me for inspiration. The idea is that you follow a schedule and have someone checking in, motivating you, and keeping tabs on your progress, like a personal trainer for your writing.

Critique

After the summer is over, you will take up some time to work on your book and when you’re ready, you can send me up to 80 revised pages, on which you’ll get my margin comments as well as an in-depth critique letter. The cost of the workshop also includes a critique of your query letter when you are ready to send your manuscript out to agents or presses.

Community

If you are in or near Los Angeles, there is an in-person workshop for added motivation. Over the summer, the group will meet 5-6 times for an evening or weekend afternoon in order to workshop up to forty pages of your book. These meetings are also designed to build your writing community and help make the process less intimidating, so we will discuss craft elements and writing roadblocks, and whatever else comes up. The group will be limited to maintain an intimate and focused atmosphere.

You can choose one, or two, or all three of these components, depending on your level of interest, availability, and drive.

If this sounds like the right fit for you, email me (Melanie.Thorne@ymail.com) with questions or for pricing details (former students receive a $75 discount), or fill out the form at the bottom of this page. Monthly payment options are available, and a $50 deposit will hold your space.

Virtual Boot camp:

Not near LA? No problem! Wherever you live, you can still participate and get the motivation you need to make significant progress on your book. Digital ass-kicking is still effective.

If you are interested in joining in the virtual portion of this boot camp, please email me for arrangements. You can choose just the kick in the pants, or the kick in the pants plus the critique–whatever you feel would benefit you the most. This is a great option for anyone not in LA who wants a writing coach in their corner this summer.

BOOT CAMP TEStimonials:

I have an MFA in writing and have been doing writers’ groups and workshops for years. Melanie is, hands down, one of the smartest and most insightful instructors I’ve ever had.

Melanie has a keen eye for story and always comes up with helpful suggestions for honing in on what’s working in your manuscript and fixing what’s not. She definitely works with you on the big picture in terms of structure, character, plot, and pacing but also delves into subtext, creating layers of meaning, and style.

She enjoys different genres and, unlike many instructors, never tries to steer your project in a direction that you don’t want to go. Kind, constructive and insightful, Melanie is an instructor who can help you make your book the best it can be. Anyone would be lucky to have the chance to work with her. –Lennox W.

I signed up for Melanie’s boot camp after 6 months of avoiding my work in progress. The motivating emails, weekly check-ins, and detailed feedback, helped me write over 100 pages. I left the boot camp not only a better writer now, but a better storyteller, too.

Melanie is equal parts teacher and friend. For me, the friend part was crucial. Melanie believed that I could write a book before I really believed it. Thanks to her, I’m this much closer to finishing my fucking book. –Jess P.
